Edmonton Underground Film Festival: “Film for film’s sake,” as creative director Christine Miller puts it.
The first-ever EUFF rolls out with its Maya Deren Edition, a salute to the Ukrainian-American, mid-century experimental filmmaker — check out her (uncredited) ahead-of-its-time 1944 The Private Life of a Cat on YouTube!
First up for EUFF.01 is a Filmmaker and & Media Evening at Collins Gallery, screening Deren’s experimental cult film Ritual in Transfigured Time set to experimental local music — RSVP at euff.ca — as well as various fusions of film and poetry.
The main-event Sunday program at The Aviary comes in three chapters of films from Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal, and around the world (including Iceland and the Philippines), with poetic and musical intermissions including by Sparrow Blue.
A delightfully avant-garde showcase of adventurous art awaits!
Details: 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Collins Gallery (11741 94 St.), free; noon at The Aviary (9314 111 St.), $22 all in/the-aviary.net
GEDfest: “Music brings people together,” Gord Downie said a decade back. “So my function in anything I do is to help bring people closer in.”
Raising money for cancer charities to honour the life of the heroic and legendary singer-poet, Tragically Hip tribute band HipNautical (see what they did there?) will play music from the great Canadian hoser songbook in what’s sure to be a beautiful evening of raised-beers memories of those we’ve lost and what we still do in their names.
Whale and the Wolf and Blues at 11 open up the proceedings at this seventh annual GEDfest.
A silent auction and a 50-50 are all on deck to help the support flow. Prepare to sing and yell to the rafters.
Details: 7 p.m. Saturday at Midway Music Hall (6107 104 St.), $63.75 all in at gedfest.ca
We’ve Got You Covered: With Christmas creeping up, the 19th annual St. Albert Quilt Sale is the perfect way to mix local craft with a gift people will hold on to for decades.
Besides the quilts: afghans, small quilted items, and more — with all proceeds delightfully going to local charities.
What’s warmer than that?
Details: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church (9915 148 St.), no charge
